Another way to bridge static and interactive mapping is to create a ‘geo-enabled’ .pdf map (i.e., a static map that is exported as a .pdf file with coordinate information). Such files can then be used on a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.) to view the map in the field and show your location on the map. Cool!
You’ll need the Avenza Maps app (for Android or iOS, which is free for limited usage). And you’ll need a geo-enabled .pdf (which you can create in ArcGIS Pro or download from Avenza (or other websites, see links below).
To Create a Geo-Enabled .pdf in ArcGIS Pro:
- Create your Map view as usual (this can be as simple as using an appropriate ESRI basemap)
- Create a simple Layout for your Map view
- Share / Export your Layout
- File Type = PDF
- UNcheck the box for Output as Image
- CHECK the box for Export Georeference Information
To Use a Geo-Enabled .pdf on a Mobile Device:
- Install the Avenza Maps app (see https://www.avenzamaps.com/mobile-maps)
- Copy the .pdf to your mobile device
- Open the .pdf on your mobile device
- When opening the .pdf there should be an option to open in Avenza Maps
- The Avenza Maps app should open and load the .pdf
- Your location should be shown as a blue dot
- You can also collect locations on the map as well
- When opening the .pdf there should be an option to open in Avenza Maps
- You can also post your .pdf online and then Download it with the Avenza Maps app directly to your mobile device
- Open Avenza Maps
- Download / enter URL
Download Geo-Enabled .PDF Maps (from Avenza or other sources)
